Methods of intervention
In veterinary clinics, castration and sterilization of domestic ferrets are performed in two ways: chemical and surgical.

Chemical
A relatively new method of sterilization of ferrets is chemical, involving the injection of drugs that reduce sex hormones.
Hormonal agents are used to sterilize females. The drug injected into the body causes a surge of peptide hormone, which is activated in the natural environment after mating with a male. Thus, doctors manage to stop the estrus in the animal.
Disadvantages of hormonal sterilization:
after a while, the heat will repeat, and it will be necessary to reapply the hormonal drug;
there is a possibility of a false pregnancy;
the high cost of the procedure.
The benefits of hormonal sterilization:
quick effect;
no surgical intervention is required;
the process is reversible, i.e. the animal will be able to restore reproductive function.
Steroid preparations can be used during the procedure, they are suitable for male and female individuals.
Doctors may also suggest the introduction of a special implant that does not cause side effects. Its validity period is 2 years.
The cost of chemical sterilization is high, which is why most owners choose the second method – surgical.
Surgical
Surgical castration and sterilization of ferrets is the most effective and relatively inexpensive procedure that allows you to solve the problem of unwanted offspring and possible pet health problems at one time.
This technique involves the surgical removal of the ovaries and uterus in females and testes in males. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia. The duration of the intervention is about 30 minutes.
